The Link Between Exercise and Better Sleep: Insights from a European Study

New Delhi: A recent study published in the journal BMJ Open sheds light on the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality. Conducted by researchers from Europe, the study analyzed data from 4399 participants across nine European countries, revealing intriguing findings about the impact of exercise on insomnia and sleep patterns.

According to the study, individuals who engage in regular physical activity experience better sleep compared to those leading a sedentary lifestyle. The researchers found that participating in workouts two to three times a week for at least one hour is sufficient to reap the benefits of improved sleep.

Over a span of 10 years, participants were surveyed about their exercise habits, insomnia symptoms, daytime sleepiness, and nightly sleep duration. Those classified as physically active engaged in exercise sessions at least twice a week or for one hour or more. Notably, individuals who maintained consistent activity levels demonstrated a lower likelihood of experiencing insomnia symptoms.

Among the participants, 25% were consistently active, 18% became active over time, while 20% remained inactive throughout the study period. Interestingly, 37% of participants remained inactive, exercising for less than an hour per week.

Upon analyzing the data, researchers adjusted for factors such as age, gender, weight, and smoking habits. Even after accounting for these variables, the results remained significant. Participants who exercised regularly two to three times a week were found to be 42% less likely to struggle with falling asleep at night and 22% less likely to exhibit symptoms of insomnia.

The study’s findings underscore the importance of integrating regular physical activity into daily routines for improved sleep quality. Whether it’s engaging in structured workouts, outdoor activities, or recreational sports, incorporating exercise into one’s lifestyle can have profound benefits for sleep health.
