Standing Against Hate: Ahmedabad Police Arrest Perpetrators of Attack on Foreign Students

In a distressing incident at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, a group of international students fell victim to a vicious attack while peacefully offering nighttime prayers. The incident, which occurred on the night of March 16, 2024, shook the community and raised concerns about safety and religious tolerance.

According to reports from the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch, two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the attack. The perpetrators allegedly stormed into the hostel where the students resided, shouting religious slogans and instigating violence. This reprehensible act resulted in injuries to five students from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The gravity of the situation prompted swift action from the authorities. The Ahmedabad Police registered an FIR against 20-25 individuals and deployed nine teams to investigate the incident thoroughly. Police Commissioner GS Malik condemned the attack, highlighting the assailants’ objection to the students’ right to practice their faith freely.

The Ministry of External Affairs also intervened, expressing concern over the incident and affirming solidarity with the affected students. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal assured that the Gujarat government is taking stringent measures to address the violence. While one of the injured students has been discharged from the hospital, the government remains vigilant in ensuring the safety and well-being of all foreign nationals studying in India.

This appalling act underscores the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect for diversity. Universities should be spaces where students from different backgrounds can coexist peacefully and engage in their religious practices without fear of persecution. The swift response from law enforcement and government authorities sends a clear message that such acts of bigotry will not be tolerated.

As we stand in solidarity with the affected students, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect in our communities. Together, we can create a world where every individual feels safe and valued, regardless of their nationality, religion, or ethnicity.
