The recent reports circulating in the media regarding the misalignment between the under-construction Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri and the Barfiwala Flyover have sparked concerns among the public. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a detailed clarification to shed light on the matter and address the community’s apprehensions.
According to the BMC, the reconstruction work for the Gokhale Bridge began on March 15, 2021, following the issuance of a work order on April 20, 2020. During the demolition phase of the old Gokhale Bridge, the railway authority mandated the reconstruction of the Railway-over Bridge (ROB) with a minimum overhead clearance of 6.00 meters from the highest rail level below the ROB.
In response to this directive, the BMC undertook the designing of the open web girder for the ROB in the railway portion, which received approval from the Railway Authorities. This approval resulted in an increase in the clear height of the ROB over the railway track by 2.735 meters.
However, a significant level difference of approximately 2.833 meters was noted between the Gokhale Bridge and the Barfiwala Flyover, presenting challenges in connectivity. The BMC highlighted the safety implications of steep gradients, including vehicle stability issues, braking challenges, increased maintenance requirements, reduced accessibility, and traffic flow disruptions.
After extensive discussions with concerned authorities and consultants, the BMC prioritized the completion of Phase-I of the Gokhale Bridge reconstruction, which was opened to the public on February 26, 2024. The connection of the Barfiwala Bridge with the Gokhale Bridge will be addressed in Phase-II work, with consultants from VJTI assessing construction methodologies for the project.
The BMC emphasized that considering the necessity for modifications and improvements to connect the Barfiwala Flyover with the Gokhale Bridge, the available working space on S.V. Road and the road from Juhu Lane towards Andheri station needed to be considered. Undertaking connection work alongside the Gokhale Bridge construction would have resulted in traffic disruptions and inconvenience to commuters.
In light of these considerations, the BMC concluded that completing Phase-I of the Gokhale Bridge construction first and subsequently addressing the connection with the Barfiwala Bridge in Phase-II work is the most feasible approach. Consultants from VJTI have already visited the site to determine the construction methodology for the connection, and once finalized, the bridge connection work will commence promptly.
The BMC’s clarification provides insights into the complexity of infrastructure projects and underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and convenience for the public. As the project progresses, the BMC remains committed to ensuring seamless connectivity and enhancing transportation infrastructure for the benefit of the community.
