French IT services giant Atos recently halted its plans to sell its struggling legacy managed infrastructure services business, Tech Foundations, after failing to reach an agreement with prospective buyer EP Equity Investment. This decision underscores the challenges Atos faces in navigating its strategic direction amidst financial pressures and leadership transitions.
The failed negotiations with EP Equity Investment, without any cancellation fees, have prompted Atos to reconsider its options. Despite the setback, Atos CEO Paul Saleh remains open to exploring strategic alternatives that align with the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders.
Atos initially announced its intent to split into two entities in 2022, following IBM’s spinoff of its managed infrastructure services business into Kyndryl. However, the inability to divest Tech Foundations highlights the complexities involved in restructuring and reshaping the company’s portfolio.
While Atos grapples with nearly €4.7 billion in debt, potential relief may come from the ongoing negotiations to sell its Big Data & Security division to Airbus. Nevertheless, the company faces mounting pressure to address its financial challenges and stabilize its operations under Saleh’s leadership, who recently assumed the CEO role.
Despite the setbacks, Atos reported preliminary financial results for 2023, with overall revenue reaching €10.7 billion. While Tech Foundations experienced a slight decline in revenue, Eviden, the other half of the business, saw modest growth. The delay in announcing full results until March 20 underscores the need for additional time to review financial reports and address non-cash goodwill impairment charges.
As Atos navigates these challenges, the company must focus on implementing a cohesive strategy that fosters growth, addresses debt concerns, and restores investor confidence.
