Trai Recommends Caller Name Display: A Step Towards Enhanced Telecommunication Experience

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the telecommunication experience for users by recommending the introduction of caller name display for regular phone calls. This optional service, if implemented by network providers, has the potential to add a new layer of convenience and transparency to phone conversations across the country.

Trai’s recommendation proposes that callers should have the option to display their names to the receiver when making regular phone calls. The suggested implementation involves a trial and assessment phase conducted by each network provider in one licensed service area (LSA) with their subscriber base. This approach ensures thorough evaluation before nationwide rollout, minimizing potential disruptions to existing services.

According to Trai’s guidelines, the displayed name should correspond to the one used during the registration of the phone number. In cases where individuals have changed their names since acquiring the number, Trai suggests leveraging government-issued identity documents for updating the records maintained by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).

For bulk and business connections, subscribers will have the flexibility to display their “preferred name,” which must align with government-registered identifiers such as trademark names or trade names. This provision reflects Trai’s commitment to accommodating diverse user needs while maintaining regulatory standards.

Moreover, Trai’s recommendations extend to registered telemarketers and callers engaged in transactional services, mandating the display of their names to the called party. This measure enhances transparency and accountability in commercial communications, fostering trust between businesses and consumers.

The trajectory of Trai’s initiative underscores a consultative approach, with the release of a consultation paper in November 2022 and a virtual open house in March 2023. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will now deliberate on formalizing these recommendations, potentially through guidelines or revisions to TSPs’ license conditions.

The proposed caller name display feature represents a significant leap forward in India’s telecommunications landscape, aligning with global best practices and enhancing user experience. By empowering callers with greater control over their communication identities, Trai paves the way for a more transparent and user-centric telecommunication ecosystem.

As the telecommunications sector continues to evolve, Trai’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to fostering innovation, consumer empowerment, and regulatory excellence. The introduction of caller name display not only augments user convenience but also reinforces India’s position as a pioneer in leveraging technology to enrich everyday interactions.
