McDonald’s Menu Makeover: The Maharashtra Cheese Controversy

Westlife Foodworld Ltd, the operator of McDonald’s restaurants in western and southern India, has found itself at the center of a cheese controversy in Maharashtra. Allegations surfaced that the fast-food giant was using cheese substitutes in some of its popular items, prompting temporary changes to its menu across the region.

In response to the allegations and subsequent scrutiny by Maharashtra’s Food & Drugs Administration, Westlife Foodworld Ltd made significant alterations to its menu offerings. The iconic McCheese Burger was rebranded as the Cheddar Delight burger, while Cheese Nuggets became Veg Nuggets. Similarly, the Cheese and Corn Burger underwent a transformation, now known as the American burger. Even the beloved Blueberry Cheesecake was not spared, receiving a name change to Blueberry Cake.

The controversy stems from claims that McDonald’s was using cheese substitutes without proper labeling, a violation of local food standards. This issue led to the suspension of a McDonald’s outlet’s license in Ahmednagar during the December quarter, further amplifying concerns about food safety and compliance.

In response to inquiries from various stakeholders, including the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Westlife Foodworld Ltd opted to remove the word “cheese” from its menu items temporarily. Saurabh Kalra, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Westlife Foodworld Ltd, addressed the matter in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), highlighting the company’s commitment to transparency and compliance with regulatory standards.
