Early Fascination with the Stars
Growing up in the sweltering heat of Palakkad, Annapurni Subramaniam found solace and inspiration in the night sky. As a young girl, she would wake up at odd hours to escape the oppressive heat, gazing curiously at the stars above. With no one around to answer her questions about the cosmos, she turned to The Hindu newspaper for cutouts of constellations, fueling her passion for astronomy.
A Journey of Dedication
Despite suggestions to pursue daytime astronomy for convenience, Annapurni remained steadfast in her pursuit of understanding the mysteries of the universe. She pursued a PhD in Physics – Astronomy, delving into the study of star clusters and galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Her dedication and perseverance led her to become the first woman to head the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru.
Balancing Passion and Music
Born into a family of Carnatic musicians, Annapurni also found joy in music, particularly playing the violin alongside her father. Despite moments of contemplation about a career in music, her love for science always prevailed. She credits her decision to pursue a PhD in science as a turning point in her career path.
